Champions League: Scholes, Ferdinand blast ‘weak’ Lukaku after Man United’s goalless draw with Sevilla

Former Manchester United legends, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand, have criticised the club striker, Romelu Lukaku, for his weak performance against Sevilla on Wednesday. The Red Devils were held to a goalless draw in the Champions League away match to Sevilla last night.

Scholes and Ferdinand were not happy with the way Lukaku played against the host team.

The duo described the Belgium international as so ‘weak’ in holding the ball.

“Again, Lukaku has to be better,” Scholes told BT Sport. “When you play counter-attacking football, the ball has got to stick.

“I am not relieved. He was so weak. You’ve got to be strong, you’ve got to get hold of the ball. You’ve got to get your touch right and bring players in. Most of the time, he’s given the ball away.”

Ferdinand on his part added: “He had 38 touches tonight and 18 times he gave it away. ‘If you’re trying to produce a counter-attacking performance, that ball has to stick to allow your team to get out.

“With Lukaku in your team at the moment, the ball doesn’t stick so the counter-attack doesn’t happen.”

United will now hope to beat Sevilla in the return leg at Old Trafford to qualifier for quarter final of the competition.
